The independent study program (“ISP”) for grades TK-6 is an option for students who may benefit from a different model than the traditional site-based program or may need a more flexible schedule.
Independent study allows for discovery on a variety of levels. Through units linked to the State Standards, students develop a deep understanding of key concepts, students make connections between content areas and practice skills needed to apply new concepts. In addition, students learn social and problem-solving skills as they work together with parents and teachers. NHCS’ ISP addresses the whole student, providing rigorous academics through interdisciplinary learning. The instructional strategies for the ISP follow a developmentally appropriate and responsive model that is in alignment with how children learn best. The development of each child’s potential is a key priority at NHCS for all students, and the TK-6 independent study program offers students an alternative educational option for those students for whom independent study is aligned with their needs and objectives.
NHCS’ ISP encourages an environment where parents and teachers work together to promote each student’s learning style. For families enrolling in the ISP at New Hope Charter School for grades TK-6, the school will provide strong support through students’ assigned Support Teacher (“ST”). All STs will hold the Commission on Teacher Credentialing certificate, permit, or other document required for the teacher’s certificated assignment. Parents and teachers work together to help students progress and achieve academically and in applied interdisciplinary topics, which are evaluated by practical evidence of skill mastery. Students and parents are encouraged to incorporate their own goals in every independent study learning period.
